Understanding the Impact of Weather on Our Wellbeing

It was a Tuesday afternoon in late June. The sun had been blazing since morning. Sarah hadn't slept properly in four days. She felt irritable, snapping at her kids, and couldn't shake the low, heavy feeling sitting in her chest.

"It's just the weather," she kept telling herself. "I'll feel better when it cools down."

But deep down, she knew the heat wasn't the only thing wearing her out. It was amplifying everything she'd already been carrying quietly — the worry, the sleepless nights, the sense of not quite keeping up.

When she finally spoke to someone, the first thing she said was: "I don't even know where to start." And that was okay. That's exactly where we start.

The Effects of Hot Weather on Mental Health

Hot weather doesn't just affect your body — it can make anxiety, low mood, and poor sleep feel much more intense. The heat can exacerbate feelings of irritability and overwhelm. You might find it harder to cope with daily tasks. This is completely normal.

If you've been struggling and the heat has tipped things over the edge, you don't have to push through alone.

Seeking Help: A Step Towards Healing

I'm Martin at New Horizon Counselling in Northwich — a calm, confidential space to talk things through at your pace. Here, you can explore your feelings without judgment. It's important to know that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Why Talking Helps

When we share our thoughts and feelings, it lightens the load. Talking can help you sort through what’s bothering you. It can also provide clarity and perspective. You may find that simply voicing your concerns can bring relief.

Finding Your Voice

Many people feel unsure about how to express their feelings. You might think, "What if I don't say the right thing?" or "What if they don't understand?" Remember, there is no right or wrong way to share your feelings. Just being honest about where you are is enough.

The Journey to Understanding

As you begin to talk about your experiences, you may uncover deeper issues. Perhaps there are patterns in your life that need addressing. This process can be enlightening and healing. It’s a journey towards understanding yourself better.

Coping Strategies for Hot Weather

While seeking support is crucial, there are also ways to manage your feelings during hot weather. Here are a few gentle strategies to consider:

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated can help improve your mood and energy levels. It’s a simple yet effective way to take care of yourself.

Create a Cool Environment

Find ways to cool down your living space. Use fans, close curtains during the day, or take cool showers. A comfortable environment can help ease some of the discomfort.

Practice Mindfulness

Engage in mindfulness exercises. These can help ground you and bring you back to the present moment. Simple breathing exercises can be very effective. Take a moment to focus on your breath, inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly.

Connect with Nature

If possible, spend time outdoors in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. Nature can be incredibly soothing. A walk in the park or sitting by a body of water can help clear your mind.

Reach Out to Loved Ones

Don’t hesitate to connect with friends or family. Sharing your feelings with someone you trust can provide comfort and support. You don’t have to go through this alone.

The Importance of Self-Compassion

As you navigate these feelings, remember to be kind to yourself. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment. Practicing self-compassion can help you heal and grow.

Embracing Your Journey

Life is a journey filled with ups and downs. Each experience teaches us something valuable. Embrace your journey, and know that it’s okay to seek help along the way.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please reach out. I’m here to help you find your way through. Together, we can explore your feelings and work towards a brighter, more balanced future.
